CAREER

Psychology

I have been working in this field first as a social worker and later as a specialist in marital counselling and indiviudal adult psychotherapy since 1980. I gathered my early experience in the perinatal field, working with individuals and couples, families and their newborns. Some of this work was with very premature infants as well as with bereavement.  I have experience in Adult inpatient psychiatry and child psychiatry on an inpatient and outpatient basis. As a result of this I trained in family therapy and, from 1990, commenced training as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with adults through the Department of Health and Monash University.

I fell into my specialty in Couple Therapy a little bit by accident when I began working at Drummond Street Relationship Centre in Carlton, Melbourne in 1992. Funded by the Attorney General's Department under the Family Law Act the organisation specialised in marital counselling, working with with people entering into, within, or contemplating leaving a relationship. Some were couples, others individuals - some of whom were finding that there was a pattern to the sorts of relationships they formed. I also worked with children whose parents were separating or had divorced and who were troubled by their feelings about this. As a result of these experiences I was invited to develop a training program in couple psychoanalytically oriented couple therapy by my manager. This was pioneered as a training program offered at post graduate level at the School of Social Work at the University of Melbourne in partnership with Drummond Street from 1999 until 2005.

If you are thinking about couple counselling have a look at my blog post here.

Alongside this I continued my studies in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, attending seminars, reading groups and weekly supervision as well as my own therapy. These together has and continues to provide the backbone of theory and practice as well as the personal understanding that informs my work. I believe it to be essential for clinicians to be prepared to continue their professional development through supervision and, if necessary, through their own personal work in order to be able to develop the necessary qualities  -rather than a set of skills - to meet the very real issues that clients wish to bring to their psychotherapy and counselling sessions.

I am a member of the Victorian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists and the Australian Association of Relationship Counsellors as well as an Associate - Group Analytic Society ( International) based in London. I am also registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council as a provider of Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy, a short term focused therapy for people suffering from depression and mood disorders.  More information can be found at www.d-i-t.org

I have sought membership of these organisations because they are committed to developing and sustaining the highest possible standards of training, competencies and codes of ethics in their fields of specialty. Each requires that members continue their professional development and show evidence of this upon renewal of their membership each year. In this way  people can be assured that clinicians are continuing to keep abreast of clinical and theoretical developments as well as being members of a professional community. This can only benefit the broader community itself.
