WHY SEEK TREATMENT?

Services

There are many reasons people seek treatment. Here are a few:

OPTIONS

With the recognition that everyone's perspective is of value; that past and present behaviour is a response to particular needs and experiences at the time, I work with people seeking to understand about why things seem to be as they are for them. With these insights change can emerge in quite surprising ways.

Here is a brief summary of each of the services I provide. These include marital/couple counselling and therapy, individual adult counselling and psychotherapy, parent-infant therapy and group therapy.

COUPLE COUNSELLING & THERAPY

I work with people entering into, within, or who are contemplating leaving a relationship. This may for a few sessions while couples sort out their differences - whether to continue together or to separate or it may be for several months, or longer. Some couples need to come for a year or more.

I also work with individuals who are having difficulty forming and sustaining a satisfying long term relationship and with people who are separating or have separated from a relationship.

Areas of interest include intercultural couple relationships, same sex relationships, couples in transition whether through work, retirement, the birth of a child and infidelity.

My blog post entitled; 'When To Seek Couple Counselling" can be found here.

I also provide training and supervision for couple therapists.

I am a member of the Australian Association of Relationship Counsellors.

COUNSELLING AND  PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR ADULT INDIVIDUALS

Most people who seek help need a brief period in counselling while they sort out a few issues before moving on with their lives. I see people for Short Term focused therapy (Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy)  (DIT) In this short term therapy we will work together to identify key relationship patterns which may be detrimental to you and then work to explore their origins, meaning for you and what you can do about these.

You may have benefitted from other therapies and counselling experiences but still feel that something essential has not been addressed.  You may consider that you need, and wish, for something more long term in order to be able to address what feels 'wrong' within. In this respect I provide medium to long term psychotherapy to assist in the exploration of these issues. The aim is to help people understand the workings of their problems and relationship patterns. With the relief this understanding might bring, it becomes possible to new ways of doing things to emerge. I am a member of the Victorian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists and the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association of Australia.

GROUP THERAPY

I work with people in groups. This is a form of therapy where the group context and process is used as the mechanism for change. It is through the development, interaction, exploration and examination of the group, facilitated by the therapist/s, that understanding, self-awareness, and an ability to improve the individual's situation occurs. The group itself creates at its core something individual and special; both greater and unique to the clients comprising the group. It is this centre of transformative power which aids the healing processes of the group members.
